Providing sustainable transport options for staff and students should be an integral aspect of any campus environmental program. Universities are some of the largest trip generators in many Australasian cities. Cars can be a convenient transport option but are responsible for a whole suite of impacts including: traffic congestion, poor air quality, traffic noise, road safety problems, greenhouse gas emissions and urban sprawl. A sustainable transport policy may target the efficiency and composition of the campus vehicle fleet and/or the transport related behaviour of staff and students. Environmental managers may seek to develop strategies that target public transport, walking and cycling. Other strategies could actively encourage carpooling, and provide transport packages that create a flexible option to encourage public transport use.
